Plantar fasciitis is a common cause of heel pain, caused by inflammation of the plantar fascia, a thick band of tissue that runs along the bottom of your foot, connecting your heel to your toes. It usually develops due to excessive strain on the fascia, leading to small tears and irritation.
Symptoms of Plantar Fasciitis:
- Sharp or stabbing pain in the heel, especially with the first steps in the morning or after long periods of rest.
- Pain that worsens after standing or walking for long periods.
- Tenderness along the bottom of the foot.
- Stiffness in the foot, especially after exercise.
Causes and Risk Factors:
- Overuse from activities like running, walking, or standing for long periods.
- Flat feet or high arches, which put extra stress on the plantar fascia.
- Obesity or weight gain, increasing pressure on the foot.
- Wearing unsupportive footwear, like flip-flops or worn-out shoes.
- Tight Achilles tendon or calf muscles, which affect foot mechanics.
Treatment Options:
- Rest and Ice – Reducing activity and applying ice helps reduce inflammation.
- Stretching and Strengthening Exercises – Especially for the plantar fascia and calf muscles.
- Supportive Footwear or Orthotics – Arch supports or cushioned shoes can relieve strain.
- Physical Therapy – Can improve flexibility and strengthen foot muscles.
- Shockwave Therapy –This can be performed by one of our Podiatrists.
