1. Corns
- What they are: Small, round, thickened areas of skin, usually on the tops or sides of toes.
- Cause: Repeated pressure or friction, often from tight or ill-fitting shoes.
- Appearance: Hard, dense center surrounded by inflamed skin. Can be painful when pressed.
- Types:
- Hard corns: Found on bony areas of the foot.
- Soft corns: Occur between toes, softer due to moisture.
2. Calluses
- What they are: Thickened, rough areas of skin, usually on the soles of the feet.
- Cause: Chronic rubbing or pressure (e.g., from walking or manual labor).
- Appearance: Flatter and larger than corns, not usually painful.
- Common locations: Heel, ball of the foot, or under the big toe.
3. Cracked Heels (Heel Fissures)
- What they are: Dry, thick skin on the heels that splits or cracks.
- Cause: Dry skin, standing for long periods, open-backed shoes, or obesity.
- Appearance: Dry, flaky skin that may split into painful cracks.
- Complications: If deep, can bleed or become infected.
Treatment Tips:
- Moisturize regularly (especially heels).
- Use pumice stones or foot files to gently remove thick skin.
- Wear well-fitting shoes with proper support.
- Avoid going barefoot on hard surfaces.
- Cushioning pads or orthotics can relieve pressure.
- See a podiatrist to help treat painful, infected, or persistent issues—especially if diabetic.
