A bunion (medical term: hallux valgus) is a bony bump that forms at the base of the big toe, where it meets the foot. Over time, the big toe pushes against the other toes, causing the joint to stick out and become swollen or painful.
Genetics – If your parents have bunions, you’re more likely to get them.
Tight or Narrow Shoes – High heels and pointy shoes can squeeze the toes, making bunions worse.
Foot Structure – Flat feet or certain foot shapes can lead to bunions.
Arthritis – Conditions like rheumatoid arthritis can increase the risk.
Injury or Stress – Repeated pressure on the foot joint can contribute.
A bony lump on the side of the big toe
Swelling, redness, or soreness around the joint
Pain when walking or wearing shoes
Stiffness or difficulty moving the big toe
