Ball of the foot pain

Ball of the Foot Pain (Metatarsalgia)

Pain in the ball of the foot is commonly called metatarsalgia. It happens when the area between your toes and arch (the metatarsal region) becomes irritated or inflamed. It can feel like a burning, aching, or sharp pain, especially when walking or standing for long periods.

Causes of Ball of Foot Pain:

High-Impact Activities – Running, jumping, or walking for long periods can stress the metatarsals.
Wearing High Heels or Tight Shoes – These put extra pressure on the ball of the foot.
Foot Structure Issues – Flat feet, high arches, or hammertoes can contribute to pain.
Excess Weight – More weight = more pressure on the metatarsals.
Aging & Fat Pad Loss – Over time, the cushioning under your foot thins, making bones more sensitive.
Foot Conditions – Bunions, Morton’s neuroma (nerve pain), or arthritis can lead to ball of foot pain.

Symptoms:

Sharp, aching, or burning pain in the ball of the foot
Pain that worsens when standing, walking, or running
Tingling or numbness in the toes
Feeling like there’s a small pebble in your shoe

How to Treat & Prevent Ball of Foot Pain:

Wear Supportive Shoes – Choose cushioned, wide-toe box shoes with good arch support.
Use Metatarsal Pads or Orthotics – These help redistribute pressure on the foot.
Ice the Area – Reduces inflammation and pain.
Stretch & Strengthen Your Feet – Foot exercises improve flexibility and reduce strain.
Maintain a Healthy Weight – Less weight means less pressure on your feet.
Rest & Avoid Overuse – Give your feet breaks if you stand or walk a lot.

If the pain doesn’t go away, a podiatrist can check for other conditions like stress fractures or nerve issues.
